THE newly-refurbished swimming pool and gymnasium at The Heights leisure centre will be opened in October according to the Isle of Wight Council.
The first phase of the multi-million pound refurbishment project at the Sandown facility, originally due to be completed by June, was delayed after the roof above the swimming pools had to be replaced.
Wet weather in June and July added a further delay but the Isle of Wight Council said the swimming pools, gymnasium and cafe would now be opened on October 15.
John Metcalfe, Isle of Wight Council deputy director of economy and environment, said: "It is always difficult with a refurbishment project to control all of the elements that can impact on planned works.
"I am sorry our users will not be able to use the facilities as soon as planned but I am sure they will feel the wait has been worth it when the pool and the new gym equipment are unveiled in October."
The current Tone Zone gym at The Heights remains open, as does the health suite and activity studio.
Swimming is available at Medina Leisure Centre, where customers can use their One Card.
The second phase of the work, which includes refurbishing the health suite and building new dry-side changing rooms, will follow.
