THE refurbished swimming pool and gymnasium at The Heights leisure centre in Sandown will re-open on Monday.

The work was due to be completed in June, as part of a multi-million pound refurbishment by the Isle of Wight Council, but was delayed after contractors discovered the roof over the swimming pool had to be replaced.

Although some facilities have remained open during the work, the centre will be closed from noon on Friday to 7am on Monday, while finishing touches will be carried out.

A second work phase is due to start on Monday, when the health suite and larger dry-side changing rooms are to be completed and the squash courts will be refurbished.

The squash courts will be fitted with motion activated lights and the front play walls are to be resurfaced.

The second phase is due to be completed by late February 2013.

In Ryde, work to convert the former boxing club at Westridge into a gym has been completed and the new facility will open on Thursday at 12:30pm. It was originally due to re-open at 9am.
