Takeaway applies for 4am licence

Turquoise Fast Food in Newport High Street.

A FAST food outlet in Newport High Street has applied to the Isle of Wight Council’s licensing department to extend its opening hours until 4am.

The application by Pasha Kebab Pizza relates to the Turquoise Fast Food premises at 137 High Street, which last year had its opening hours slashed until midnight following police concerns about disorder and violence in and around the restaurant.

According to the application, the issues have been resolved with a new licence holder willing to provide appropriate security, including door security, CCTV and a queueing system, and comply with any requests from the council or police to allow late-hours opening.

Despite the new measures, Newport Parish Council’s planning and licensing committee, which, as a statutory consultee, considered the application last week, felt the midnight cut off should remain in place.

They felt a modest extension could be considered at a later date if there were no further significant problems.

The application can be seen on the Isle of Wight Council’s licensing website and the deadline for comments is March 9.

I'm a student and used to use this place a lot when it was open until 2am. What I would say is that since it's closed, the trouble just seems to have moved elsewhere across the town. At that time of night, there are a few idiots around that are there to cause trouble, but this is the minority. When people have had a lot to drink, a bit of food can help prevent them causing trouble elsewhere.

@Barry Lews I can see where your coming from, but it's up to them really if their willing to stay up an extra few hours, earn a little extra cash. It may well attract trouble, it might not, just have to see how things go.

4am seems unnecessary. If people want food when out at night they could always leave the club a bit earlier to get something to eat. 2am would be more suitable for the area. Most takeaways in Southampton now have door staff due to the number of morons that can't handle their drinks. Shame the Island is getting like it.
