Sutton & Cheam 9 Borehamwood 11

Southern Counties

ASA Quarter-Finals

A late two-goal haul from Daniel Williams finally saw off the challenge of Sutton & Cheam and booked Wood's place in the semi-finals of a competition they are bidding to win for the third time in four years.

Both sides were locked at 8-8 as they entered the final period of play.

A mistake by John Dubois allowed the hosts to go 9-8 up but that proved to be their final score as Wood stepped up a gear for the remainder of the match.

Williams bagged a goal after good work from his brother Luke to level matters up.

And then he followed that up by scoring with a powerful shot after his original effort was saved. Jason Chase, with his fourth goal of the game, completed the scoring.

Wood got off to a tremendous start and cruised to a 3-0 lead. Nick Sturge (2) and Chase opened their side's account and a strong rearguard display kept the visitors out.

It was 4-0 at the start of the second quarter, thanks to Chase, but Sutton hit back and scored three quick goals.

Wood rallied and Williams opened up a two-goal cushion for his side with a superb solo effort. A shot from four metres out by Chase gave Wood a 6-3 lead at half time.

Sutton struck at the start of the next period which they dominated.

Wood scored two goals in the quarter, with strikes from Williams and Nick Sturge, but by the end of the period Sutton were back in the game at 8-8.

Wood face Beckenham at home for a place in the final.

Three members of the club represented England in a recent four-day competition.

Daniel Williams, Giles Martin and John Moore were part of the squad that were runners-up in their North Sea Cup group.

The result means that England has an outside chance of qualifying for the European Championships. Williams was second top-scorer for the team with 12 strikes.

Otter are the opposition for Wood seniors in their first ever London League Division Three clash.
