I am very pleased that the Labour government has been frustrated in its attempt to change the voting system for the European Parliament elections.

The system they are proposing is contrary to the spirit of democracy.

People should be allowed to vote for the candidate or candidates of their choice, but Labour wants a closed list system which would deprive us of that right.

This is a victory for democracy, and a warning signal for those politicians who seek to undermine the British constitution with badly thought out reforms.
