A NEW arrival in Brighstone has garden gnomes quaking in their boots.

Standing at almost 12ft tall and boasting a six-foot wingspan, this carved dragon sculpture, pictured here 'landing’ at Yarmouth on Wednesday lunchtime, must rank as one of most elaborate garden ornaments on the Isle of Wight and one of the more unusual holiday souvenirs.

Keeping up with the Toogoods, who also own an owl sculpture carved by chainsaw artist Paul Sivell, is no mean feat.

Valerie Toogood said: "Our garden is looking more and more like Hogwarts."

Valerie and her husband, Mike, spotted the dragon — which they have named Merlin — in a reclamation yard while holidaying in Somerset.

"It’s stunning — the way its carved, all the detail," said Valerie.

"It has a human head in one claw and a dagger in the other."

Transporting it back to the Island proved a delicate operation with the couple having to find an alternative route avoiding low bridges and regular stops to ensure it was securely tied down.

Valerie said: "We cleared some bridges by just three inches — I was a nervous wreck by the time we arrived on the Island."

To lessen the risk of damage, the sculpture, which will take pride of place in couple’s back garden in Moor Lane, was stood upright in a trailer making for quite a sight on the motorway.

Valerie added: "On the ferry, all the crew were taking photographs."

@matthew emson
"But come on, is this really news?"
@ G Day
"More breaking news..... a badger has been rummaging through bins in Niton"
@ Paul Strauss
"I will be visiting B+Q tomorrow as I am going to buy a birdbath"
All of whom beat the "story" of the half dozen kids who have "pleaded" to allow wind turbines to be built in Wellow.
Its like the other "story" that Infinergy "will appeal" according to the CP of
20 July.
My information is that they are not in a position to appeal.

Of course, as Stuey says "half of what goes into the CP doesn't constitute "news" and "half" is a gross overestimate by about 70%.

I think Merlin is very cool. I would certainly love him in my garden.
To all the sour sallys moaning that this isn't 'news', so what? Half of what goes into the IWCP doesn't constitue as 'news', it's more local interest. If you don't find it that interesting then don't read it. I think Merlin looks awesome.

More breaking news..... a badger has been rummaging through bins in Niton........

This would have only been real news if it had come away from its fastenings on the ferry and landed on another car.

Shh-don't tell the planning department. They will serve you with an enforcement notice if you try putting up trellice on your 6ft fence around your garden. I guess a dragon is different though?!!

Whilst some might consider the sculpture to be a hideous, tasteless and expensive eyesore, I congratulate the Toogoods for being true to themselves, and I must confess to rather liking Merlin myself, although it would look out of place in my garden as I have eschewed the fantasy theme for a rather more conventional vegetable patch and lawn. I could probably manage a small squirrel, rather like those in Parkhurst Forest - but not as big.

The headline is good - very witty. But come on, is this really news? Couple by some wood. Wow!
