STANDING six feet tall and with a face not even a mother could love, this full-size Orc could be the ultimate burglar deterrent.
Straight from the pages of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the resin model in full body armour is one of the more unusual lots in a charity auction — or should that be Orc-tion — of goods and promises at Shorwell Parish Hall tomorrow (Saturday).
More than 200 varied lots will go under the hammer, including an exhilarating Biggles-esque flight in a Tiger Moth and, perfect for fans of 007, the chance to ride in a classic Aston Martin DB5.
Other lots to be auctioned by guest auctioneer Tim Smith, from Island Auction Rooms, include hampers, home-made cakes and puddings, clay pigeon shooting, dog training, furniture and paintings.
The sale is the main fundraiser in a 12-month series of events to raise funds for the upkeep of the parish hall, which was recently awarded grant funding from Sport England through its Inspired Facilities Olympic Legacy Fund to build an extension to provide changing facilities for Shorwell United FC and further boost its rental income.
Many of the lots have been donated for auction while others are being sold on a 50/50 basis, with half the proceeds going to the hall.
Chairman of the parish hall committee, Tony Scotcher, said: "We need to raise money to maintain and sustain the parish hall.
"Until the extension is finished and we start generating extra revenue through renting it out, we need to raise funds to pay the bills and maintain the building."
Catalogues are available prior to the auction from Shorwell Post Office and Brighstone Village Stores, while viewings are being held today (Friday) between 7pm and 9pm, tomorrow between 10am and noon and immediately before the sale, which starts at 7.30pm.
