Thousands of miles and thousands of pounds

Gus McKechnie competes his fundraising challenge on Red Funnel.

A FAMILIAR face on board Red Funnel ferries has reached the end of an epic seven year adventure and cycled the equivalent of twice round the world.

Gus McKechnie, who suffers with cerebral palsy, crossed the Solent 4,500 times since 2007 and spent every journey pedalling the huge 50,000 miles on his static bike.

Gus, who wore out eight rear tyres, two saddles, two bike chains and five pairs of cycling shorts, said: "When I set out to complete this challenge I was just looking to raise vital funds for charities that had worked so hard to help my family and that close to my heart.

"There were times when the journey seemed so long and I thought about stopping, but the overwhelming support and encouragement from customers and staff at Red Funnel really kept my focus and resolve."

Gus, of Southampton, raised £90,000 in memory of his late father, mother and brother, for charities close to his heart including those supporting cancer and the disease haemochromatosis — a build up of iron in the body.
