Time travellers

TIME travelling youngsters at Binstead Primary School stepped back into the past for a week by immersing themselves in Island history.
A packed programme of events, culminating in a history evening at the school attended by around 200 parents and residents, allowed youngsters to peek into their own family histories, as well as the wider history of the Island, ranging from prehistoric times to the 1980s.
Youngsters were given talks by a number of organisations including the County Press, Dinosaur Isle, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and Carisbrooke Castle.
They also had artefacts brought in from the past five decades, which included an intriguing look at the peculiar 1980s obsession, the Rubik’s Cube.
Other events which entertained the children included a talk on the history of shipping on The Solent, a lecture by metal-detecting enthusiasts and finding out about books from their parents and grandparents’ era.
Headteacher Helen Flynn said: "We were very grateful to a lot of local people. It has been a very successful week and we are grateful to everyone who has been involved."
