Topshop planning problem

Top Shop in Newport, which failed to get proper planning permission from the Isle of Wight Council.

A £250,000 revamp of a clothing chain’s Isle of Wight branch could fall foul of planning bosses at the Isle of Wight Council.

Topshop, Newport, which re-opened today (Thursday) has come under fire after it was revealed the firm put in a new shop front and sign without getting planning permission.

Now, planning bosses at the council have advised the store that it could be subject to enforcement action if planning permission is not granted when the application is heard by members of the council’s planning committee.

Bill Murphy, the Isle of Wight Council’s head of planning, said: "We are aware Topshop has undertaken work to their shop front before securing appropriate planning permission.

"We have advised the company that any work they have undertaken is at their own risk and should the applications be refused, they will be subject to enforcement action."

The council said enforcement action could include having to restore the building to its previous appearance.

Top Shop declined to comment.

It is nice to see shops investing in Newport instead of pulling out.
It is about time that people were encouraged to shop in Newport with free parking on quieter days don't you all think?

It's a good job the planners aren't on performance related salary as they would be owing money on payday.

With everything bad going on in the world who really cares that top shop have had a revamp without council permission, is it about time they looked at the monstrosity they all work in I suggest a large explosive may help blow the building up!

oh forbid a company being able to do anything to improve the look of a shop front, it actually improves the area, they need to be concentrating on the area of the old peacocks, bon marche thats a state to see empty shops what a disgrace, reduce the rent and get some new blood into the town god how its needed

it looks great and certainly a lot better than B and Q, the carbuncle built at the end of stag lane and the ugly council offices all approved by them. I agree how can they criticise this company when 50 per cent of the shops in newport have been reduced to pawn brokers,
pound shops, gambling dens or charity shops, because of council extorniate rates and parking charges.
They will say this is a separate matter, but is it really?
Top shop now looks stylish and is an asset for newport.

this council are a complete waste of space, they're always causing trouble for someone. the island is being held back on all fronts due to this council's age old attitudes, so what if if top shop didnt get planning permission, it looks ten times better than all those scruffy charity shops we have, newport looks like a dump these days, it's about time someone made an effort & top shop have. in my dealings with this council i have often been left lost for words at their stupidy. instead of moanig about something looking nice for a change, they should take a look at sandown & make all the hotel & shop owners tidy their property's up, the place is a disgrace.
