RYDE firefighters will be taking their next fund-raising challenge to the heights of outer space when they attempt to break a world record.
Ten firefighters have challenged themselves to climb 71 miles — the same distance it would take to reach outer space or climb Mount Everest 13 times — on a ladder.
If they are successful on August 5 and 6, they will steal the world record from the Isle of Man holders.
The crew will be raising money for the Ryde Fire Station charity fund — which helps local families in difficult situations — and The Wight Brainy Bunch.
The Bunch was set up by Ryde firefighter Mark Grimes and his wife, Kathryn, following Mark’s diagnosis of a brain tumour in 2015. It aims to provide Island support and awareness, and to raise funds for brain tumour research.
The firefighters are looking for local businesses to get involved with Everest13 and those interested can contact crew manager Sam Ade at sam.ade@iow.gov.uk.
