Town to get community bus?

A COMMUNITY bus service could be launched in Yarmouth — if the demand is there.

A group of residents are thinking of running a bus route around the town, linking Port La Salle, Westhill Lane and Thorley.

Funding could be available from the Rural Community Council (RCC), if a formal proposal is submitted before the end of the financial year.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of Yarmouth Town Council, Michael Craig, who is spearheading the project, said a survey would need to be done before a proposal but invited town councillors to get involved.

"We would like to determine the level of interest in the bus service by sending a survey to residents," said Mr Craig.

At this stage, it is unknown who would run the bus service, although Mr Craig said a 25-seater vehicle had been discussed.

A meeting with the RCC will be held on Monday, to discuss formulating a proposal and the funding options, with up to £5,000 available. It is likely only £1,000 will be applied for to cover the cost of the survey. Yarmouth Town Council’s advisory committee agreed to assist.
