ISLAND Roads tackled an oil spill on a Newport road today (Monday), caused by severed tractor hydraulics.

The Isle of Wight highways contractor was called at 8.54am to Forest Road, to reports of oil spilled for around 200 metres between the Gunville traffic lights and the entrance to Parkhurst Forest, in the direction of the dual carriageway.

An Island Roads spokesman said a mechanical sweeper would be sent to sweep the road after the spill kits — granules similar to cat litter which absorb oil — had soaked up the spillage.
