Trading lunchtimes for litter picks

By County Press Reporter

YOUNGSTERS at an Island middle school have given up their lunch break to give something back to the community.

A group of pupils from Osborne Middle School sacrificed their playtime to take part in a litter pick.

Over two days, the group collected 13 bags of litter from their local area, 14 fewer than they collected the previous year.

The school’s headteacher, Mr Edney, presented badges and certificates to those who took part, in assembly.

Gillian Mulcahy, senior environment and neighbourhoods officer, said: "Osborne Middle School has been extremely supportive of our litter-free Island campaign. Pupils have a really good understanding of the impact litter has on their communities and have been working hard to discourage people from littering."

The Isle of Wight Council has joined forces with Keep Britain Tidy to promote the Big Tidy Up. Schools and groups across the Island have been getting involved.

Anyone interested in doing a litter pick can go to www.thebigtidyup.org or contact the council on 821000.
