All work in factory, shop and office stopped, traffic in our streets came to a standstill, men left driving seats to stand rigidly at attention beside their motionless vehicles. Women, most of them in sombre garb, bowed their heads, men doffed their hats, and many a handkerchief was seen to be lifted to tear-dimmed eyes. All this because a deceased King had begun his last journey in the realm he had ruled so well and so humanely for fifteen years.

Chiswick Chamber of Commerce, meeting at the Star and Garter Hotel, Kew Bridge, on Monday, registered a strong protest against the borough council's decision to set aside £500 for civic functions and entertainments. Councillor Hedley G Fry suggested that the time was not opportune to give the council carte blanche to spend money on a week's hilarity''.

Dr R G Legge, vicar of St. George's, Brentford, dedicated an extension of the memorial plaque at Brentford Market on Wednesday to men from the market who were killed in the 1939-45 war. Before the unveiling ceremony spring flowers were placed at the foot of the memorial and poppy wreaths hung on either side.
