Being involved with several organisations including the Inland Waterways Association and the Better Government for Older People, I fully agree with the letter from M. Fellberg of OPeN Croydon.

Statistics available show us that the majority of Pensioners are so close to the poverty line that they are financially unable to avail themselves of a computer, likewise the many small organisations which campaign on their behalf.

In many parts of the UK this has been remedied by local Council and businesses passing on their older computer equipment to voluntary bodies when updating their systems.

After servicing these can be returned to active service rather than scrapped.

Many pensioners may not know how to handle a computer let alone operate the internet or email but this is soon rectified by local education authorities at adult centres.

I request that council bodies or companies, help with this scheme which would allow local groups to be both kept in touch and to make full use of their valuable experience and time by keeping a fully up-dated web-site.

The need only to contact Croydon OPeN at Croydon Voluntary Action, 97 High Street, Thornton Heath, Surrey, cR7 8RY or telephone 020 8684 3862 or their local CVA office to get advice or to discuss any points.
