FOUR Swanley pupils have won a national award for designing a herb garden.

The pupils, from Swanley School, St Mary's Road, won the Community Service Volunteers national youth category award.

They had been taking part in Make a Difference Day a day where people all over the UK take an active role in their community.

The sensory herb garden is being built at a residential home in White Oak Court, Swanley. It is designed for elderly people with bad eyesight, who will be able to smell and feel the herbs instead.

Pupil Alex Davidson, 13, who designed the garden along with four of her school friends, said: "It's the first time I've done serious gardening work. It's tough but really rewarding.

She added: "We just want it to be lovely for all the people at White Oak Court."

Tara Jeewoonarain, 23, from Groundwork Kent Thames-side has been helping the pupils with the project.
