UNISON members sign up to Fight for the Wight

Monday, March 14, 2016 - 14:15

PUBLIC sector workers on the Isle of Wight have added their voices to the Fight for the Wight campaign.
Around 60 Unison members who attended Thursday's AGM voted overwhelmingly to support the campaign, aimed at securing more government funding for the Island's public services.
The union represents around 1,000 Isle of Wight Council staff.
Branch secretary Mark Chiverton said: "Unison has been working closely with other trade unions and groups like Unite the Isle of Wight to make the case for our public services.
"Unison has called for more funding for local governments across the country, and we feel the Isle of Wight in particular is a special case. We welcome Fight for the Wight as an important part of that wider drive to make the case to government.
"Members felt the County Press campaign would be an important vehicle for a large number of people to show how strongly they feel, that this is the way to go."
"Members also felt it was essential that Andrew Turner and the Tory group on the Isle of Wight Council should be fully committed to the campaign's aims of more money for public services."
