Van in collision with pedestrian

AN ELDERLY pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being involved in a collision with a van in Freshwater last night (Sunday).

An Isle of Wight Police spokesman said crews were called at 7.50pm to the junction of Stroud Road and Camp Road after a Ford Transit van collided with the 78-year-old man.

The spokesman said the 78-year-old from Freshwater suffered serious injuries and was being treated at St Mary's Hospital.

The van driver, a 27-year-old man from Totland, was arrested on suspicion of driving without due care and attention and was bailed until May.

A police spokesman said that the pedestrian had life threatening neck injuries and could be moved to Southampton General Hospital.

A spokesman for St Mary's Hospital said the 78-year-old was in a stable condition.

*A hospital spokesman said the 78-year-old was moved to the Intensive Care Unit at Southampton General Hospital at around 6pm last night (Monday).
