Vandals target play area

VANDALS have targeted a children's play area, spray-painting racist and foul language, forcing it to be closed.

Police have appealed for witnesses after graffiti was sprayed along roads in the area of the Nelson Road Play Park, which was also hit, between 7pm on Sunday July 29 and 4.30am on Monday July 30.

A spokesman said: "A blue spray can was used to cause damage to two cars, footpaths, walls of businesses and homes, a post box and a lamp post as well as the play park.

"The streets affected are Nelson Road, Winston Road, the footpath between Winston Road and Clarendon Place, Melbourne Street, the footpath between Melbourne Street and Nelson Road, Field Place, Caesars Road and Westminster Lane."

PC Tracey Sainsbury from Newport police station said: "The person or people responsible for this incident have caused extensive damage to cars and buildings as well as to a play park which has now had to be closed during the school holidays due to the use of racist and foul language.

"The damage occurred in a number of roads; someone must have seen or heard something. I would urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward and speak to us as your information could be significant and could help us find those responsible."
