* Mayor of Shanklin, Cllr Jon Gilbey, described how he had been greeted by a scene of'devastation' when he turned up for work at his business, the Paramount Cafe, which is located near to the scene of the fire.

Cllr Gilbey said: "I drove up as normal to work at around 6am and the road was all cordoned off. Fire engines were everywhere. They got one person out using a ladder. Downstairs in the furniture shop, they had to gain entry by smashing down the door. I have never seen such a mess."

He praised the Daish Hotel in the town which had helped residents who were affected by the fire.

He added: "They took them in to somewhere safe. Then, men from the council came to help find them accommodation.

"It is only when something like this happens that you realise how lucky we are with our emergency services."
