Vintage business brings 1940s to the screen

A BUSINESSWOMAN with a keen eye for 1940s memorabilia has helped to recreate the era for the BBC 2 programme Wartime Farm.

Jayne Read runs her own Facebook business, Island Memories, buying and selling vintage goods, and has supplied the programme with 1940s’ items, including clothes, furniture and kitchenware.

She is due to appear on the popular show tonight (Thursday) night as an extra.

"The producers heard about Island Memories through some of my regular customers," explained Jayne, of Abingdon Road, Ryde.

"There is so much interest in the 1940s era right now. It’s very fashionable. It was a time of economic hardship, which I think people can relate to, but also an exciting time because no-one knew what was around the corner. People lived for the day and there was a great community spirit."

Jayne is now looking to expand her business by organising vintage and retro fairs, the first of which will be held at Quay Arts on October 27.
