Police are hunting a man and a youth who attacked a shop assistant during a robbery at Royal Wines in Croxdale Road, Borehamwood, on Friday night.

Appealing for the public's help in catching the culprits, PC Trevor Josland said: "This was a despicable crime and we will be pursuing this to the end."

The 34-year-old victim was left with severe bruising around both eyes and a suspected broken nose after being repeatedly punched.

Described as aged around 16 and 25, the pair entered the off-licence at around 10.45pm.

The youth placed eight cans of beer on the counter -- but the shop assistant challenged him to prove his age.

While the older man held the victim's arms, the youth struck out, punching the victim in the face three times.

On the way out, the robbers kicked in a £450 window.

PC Josland said: "Somebody must know something that could help us catch these people.

"They may know someone who is nursing a sore hand, or who matches the description given by the victim. This is over-and-above a normal assault and it is not acceptable."

The youth is described as 5ft 11ins, of proportionate build with light brown, very short hair. His clothing included a white t-shirt and he was wearing an ear-ring. His accomplice is described as 5ft 6ins and stocky with very short, blonde hair. His clothing included a black jacket.

Telephone PC Josland on 0181 733 5461.
