VOLUNTEERS from the Isle of Wight joined the Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) national Great British Beach Clean last weekend in an effort to reduce litter on the beaches and to encourage new recycling initiatives.
The six volunteers surveyed 100 metres of Shepherd's Chine, collecting 767 pieces of rubbish from this stretch alone, alongside a larger clean of the rest of the beach.
The clean, which was organised by MCS volunteer Sarah Marshall, resulted in three large bags of rigid plastics that will go to TerraCycle for recycling.
Helen Burns, owner of Isle of Wight business Awesome Shores, also found interesting pieces of driftwood for her artwork.
"I feel passionately about marine plastic pollution and now sell a range of plastic alternatives and reusable products," said Helen.
