Volunteers wanted at landmarks

The National Trust is looking for volunteers at Isle of Wight landmarks including Mottistone Manor.

THE National Trust is looking for volunteers to help look after its Isle of Wight landmarks.

The trust will be holding an open day tomorrow (Saturday) at the Unity Hall, St Thomas Square, Newport, from 10am to 3pm, to give enthusiastic Islanders a chance to discover how they can help support and protect the Island’s historic sites, which include around 20 square miles of countryside, Mottistone Manor Gardens, and Bembridge Fort and windmill.

Hannah Griffiths, custodian for The Needles Battery, another National Trust site, said: "At the open day, we are going to be showcasing the work we do here on the Island and the roles we have available for volunteers.

"People can volunteer as an individual, a group or a family. We have roles including administration work and meeters and greeters at our properties, we have practical work out in the countryside helping the rangers do fence repairs and scrub clearance, maintenance work such as painting and helping keep pathways clear and we also need help with the events team."

Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they have available and stick with one job, or try lots of different ones.

Hannah said: "We are very flexible. Some people will do one day a week, regular hours in a regular role, and some people give us their time once a month.

"We are hoping to have enough roles and positions for everyone to do what they want."

• Anyone interested in giving time to become a volunteer for the National Trust can visit the open day and chat with staff, existing volunteers, see pictures of the volunteer work and have a cup of tea and home-made biscuits, or, for more information, call 01983 741020.
