THE number of people who took part in the Isle of Wight Walking Festival has risen again, this year by an extra four per cent.

The event, dubbed the biggest of its kind in the UK, attracted 21,419 walkers and statistics show people are booking their accommodation earlier and staying longer.

Thirty five per cent stayed for between one and four nights, 29 per cent for five to seven nights and 24 per cent for eight to 14 nights.

This is the 12th year the festival has taken place and it has grown to around 250 guided walks, ranging from morning, afternoon and evening ambles to strenuous long-distance walks for experienced ramblers.

The popular speed dating walk once again proved hugely successful in bringing people together, notching up 18 matches on the day.

Cllr George Brown, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for the economy, tourism, leisure and planning, said: "The Island’s diverse landscape has once again proved an ideal setting for the walking festival and I would like to thank all those involved in organising this major event, including our dedicated walk leaders, who give their time freely to promote the Island as one of the UK’s best walking destinations."

Work is already under way for next year’s Isle of Wight Walking Festival and anyone interested in being involved in any capacity can contact Elaine Cesar on 01983 823099, ext 5224. The Isle of Wight Council is seeking a headline sponsor for 2010 to replace the Ordnance Survey, which ended its long and successful association with the walking festival in 2009, following a company re-structure.

Those interested in finding out the benefits of becoming a sponsor of the Isle of Wight Walking Festival can also telephone Elaine Cesar.

• The Isle of Wight Autumn Walking Weekend is from October 22 to 25.
