East Cowes mayor Cllr Peter Lloyd leads the tour and stops to point out historical interests at Bridge Square.
IT WAS once the home of Queen Victoria and remains one of the industrial powerhouses on the Island.
Now, the proud heritage of East Cowes has been brought vividly to life, thanks to the launch of three 'healthy heritage walks’ which outline the town’s illustrious past — and help keep you fit at the same time.
At a launch event for the new walks on Sunday, a plaque was unveiled at the East Cowes home of famous yacht designer, Uffa Fox and another by the Island’s High Sheriff Gay Edwards celebrating the contribution to the town of famous architect John Nash who is buried in the town’s church.
The three walks celebrate the town’s architectural and industrial heritage and are illustrated with copious amounts of information about the town.
The leaflet to accompany the walks has been produced by The Friends of East Cowes, and is available from the town’s heritage centre in Clarence Road.
The three walks, all of which are beautifully illustrated with an easy to read map, tell of the town’s history and point out places of special interest, including the former home of hovercraft designer Sir Christopher Cockerell, the site of which is now occupied by a block of flats and the remains of Henry Vlll’s East Cowes fort, from which the town gets its name.
