Staines' promotion hopes suffered a setback last weekend as they were held to a goalless draw by relegation threatened Leyton Pennant at Wadham Lodge last weekend.

Leyton, who have only won one game since the new year were on the back foot from the start as Mark Butler (twice) and Chris Kerr went close.

Staines were unfortunate not to go ahead when Craig Jansen launched a speculative 40-yard shot which cannoned off the Leyton crossbar.

Butler went close soon after and was again denied by Craig Knox from point-blank range. The Swans' defence untroubled by the Leyton forward line of Dave Russell and Ibrahim Oladeji.

Staines were denied a perfectly good goal in first half injury time. Staines were awarded a free kick just outside the area. As the Leyton wall was being moved back to ten yards, Steve Battams connected with Jansen's quickly taken kick to head home.

Seven minutes into the second half Knox did well to block Jon Underwood's powerful drive and remarkably saved the rebound from Jansen.

Knox denied Jansen and Butler in quick succession and at the other end Oladeji spurned a rare Leyton move over the top of the Staines crossbar.

In the dying minutes Staines were forced to defend and Matt Lovett was called upon to make a superb fingertip save from Leyton skipper Andy Silk and in injury time saved a well struck effort from Russell.

With time almost up Battams dragged Staines' last chance wide of the mark from a Ricky Baptiste cross to compound Staines' misery and relegate them to sixth place, two points behind a promotion place.

Staines: Lovett, Underwood, Finnan, Battams, Harte (Everitt 79), Hayward, Harrison, Kerr (Baptiste 69), Butler, Jansen, Reilly. Unused substitute: O'Shea.

Staines announced that their game with Bishops Stortford at York Road, postponed on April 4 will now be replayed on Monday April 17, kick off 7.45pm.
