AN Isle of Wight wastewater treatment works is to get a £700,000 upgrade from Southern Water.

New equipment will be built to give the wastewater treated at the site in Vicarage Lane, Newtown, an extra clean before it is recycled into the environment. This will ensure the site continues to meet new Environment Agency standards.

Southern Water Project Manager Jon Kenrick said: "This is an important scheme which will benefit the natural environment around Newtown."

Construction, which is being carried out by contractor 4Delivery, is due to complete in the spring.
