Following the excellent double for Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers' seniors, with their men and women successful in the South of England Road Relay Championships, the club's younger athletes performed well in the McDonald's-sponsored relays meeting at Sutton Park.

The boys' U17 squad were outstanding, taking the silver medal, only 30 seconds behind champions Sunderland.

Tom Bedford got them off to a grand start in the 4x3.8km event, with the fifth fastest time of the day, 12mins 4secs. Oscar Battrams (13mins 1secs) ran creditably, before Stephen Murphy (12min 9secs) gave them a great chance of getting among the medals, and Alex Rodgers (12 mins 43secs) assured them of second spot, out of 72 teams.

Shaftesbury's U13 girls' team, of S Bentley (9mins 6secs), I Ramsay (9mins 21secs) and L Barr (9min 9secs) did very well to finish sixth in the 3x2.35km contest.

Shaftesbury's U13 boys were 20th out of 64 teams. The four runners in the 4x2.35km contest were Robert Hime (8mins 53sec), Jamie Hunt (8mins 33secs), Daniel Russell (8 mins 211secs) and Joshua Neve (9mins 18secs).
