ISLAND youngsters who have overcome adversity were recognised at the High Sheriff Awards.

In one of her last engagements as the IW High Sheriff, Mary Case presented the winners with framed awards at the ceremony at Quay Arts.

She said: "This is in recognition of young people on the IW who have, against all odds and adversities, achieved. We’re also grateful there are so many groups on the Island helping them."

After a few run-ins with the police, winner 17-year-old Ricky Keyes joined the Military Preparation College, at Ryde, and and turned his life around.

He said: "This award proves how far I have actually come. I’m going into the army now and hope to do selection next January."

See this week's County Press for more pictures and a full list of results.
