Westie Festy raises hundreds

MORE than £250 was raised as owners and their westies walked the length of Ryde Beach in aid of Westie ReHoming.

Forty dogs attended the Westie Festy yesterday (Sunday), leaving organiser Sharon Sloper "delighted" with the outcome.

She said: "Due to the awful weather conditions we were only expecting 20 to 25 dogs, so it was a tremendous achievement to see 40 turn up at the beach. Some even came over from Portsmouth.

"Due to the success, we’re going to hold our third walk next year, in May.

"To me westies are wonderful, but as they can sometimes develop serious skin conditions they need a lot of attention.

"Some owners are unable to cope with the vet bills, which may lead to the dogs being rehomed.

"We wanted to raise awareness with owners that they shouldn't worry about this and there are charities out there that can help."

I notice that the write up above has changed somewhat to what was written earlier. I agree some Westies do have severe skin problems and we are lucky that both of ours are ok, this was due to very careful breeding on the breeders part and we searched very carefully for ours, to find a good breeder and went on recommendations from other owners.

It was a lovely time on Sunday and the Westies loved being together.
I've taken some pictures of the event: http://www.virtuallywight.co.uk/westies/

Please don't let this lady put you off of getting a Westie. We have 2 boys and would never call them high maintenance. They like any dog need exercise and even though they are medium sized dogs will walk for miles but are also just as happy with a short walk. Ours are bathed and trimmed every 3 months just like many other breeds and only need a weekly groom. Any dog can cause problems if it is not trained and even with training are unpredictable, one of ours is not very good with bigger dogs but this could be down to the fact that he has been attacked by bigger dogs in the past. They do need and like a lot of attention but so do us humans and at the end of the day that's why we have dogs isn't it. If you have time, patience, money and plenty of love to give re-home a westie, you will get lots of love back. Westies are a delightful breed and even though they are extremely stubborn they have wonderful characters and a joy to welcome into your home.
