Who’s that girl?

Thursday, May 21, 2009 - 16:38

LITTLE did she know it, but when she was snapped — heavily pregnant and cigarette in hand — this girl was destined to become the iconic image of the biggest festival the world has ever seen.
Surrounded by a sea of tents, the girl with no name in the middle of Desolation Row at the 1970 Isle of Wight Pop Festival, features in worldwide publicity for a new book to celebrate the festival’s 40th anniversary next year.
The “girl” probably now qualifies for her bus pass and her grandchildren, if she has any, could easily now be the age she was then.
But who is she? Where is she?
Former Fleet Street photographer Bob Aylott, who took the photograph that features in his book Isle of Wight Festival 1970, Six Days That Rocked the World is using the image on posters and worldwide publicity.
“The photograph was never published at the time. Since then it has become one of the iconic images of the world’s greatest rock festival.
“I am now trying to find the mystery mum and discover what has happened to her,” said Mr Aylott, from Fareham, Hampshire.
“She could be anywhere in the world and it would be fascinating to track her down and give her a book as a keepsake of six days that really did shake the world.”
The festival attracted more than 600,000 fans and starred giants of rock music including Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Joan Baez.
• The book, published next month by The Press Photographers Gallery, is priced at £35. The County Press shop has a limited number of pre-publication copies.
