HIGH winds on The Solent resulted in Wightlink's new car ferries being taken temporarily out of service on the Yarmouth to Lymington route yesterday afternoon (Sunday). The route's two vessels, Wight Sky and Wight Light — the ferry company's latest additions — were taken off at around 1.30pm when wind speeds picked up to above their safe operating limits.
Wightlink's Cenred car ferry ran an hourly service in their place, a Wightlink spokesman said.
By 7am today (Monday), the service was resumed from Lymington with the new vessels, although running to its new reduced hourly timetable, which will remain in force until further notice.
The Ryde to Portsmouth Wightlink catamaran was also disrupted by sea conditions yesterday, again reduced to an hourly service.
Hovertravel said the winds led to its service running around ten minutes late.
Red Funnel ferries were running as normal.
Meanwhile, a number of sailings on Wightlink's Fishbourne-Portsmouth route are being cancelled from tomorrow (Tuesday), as repairs are carried out at the Fishbourne terminal. Some extra sailings are being added on the Yarmouth-Lymington route and on the Ryde Pier Head to Portsmouth FastCat foot passenger service.
