A LIFEBOAT crew from the Isle of Wight went to the aid of a stricken windsurfer today (Friday) after his sailing rig broke.

Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat was called at 12.15pm to Yaverland after reports the windsurfer was in difficulty, but when crews arrived he had managed to get ashore.

A spokesman for the lifeboat said the windsurfer had been on his first sail of the day with two friends when the force 7 winds broke his sailing rig.

One of other windsurfers headed back to the beach to raise the alarm while the other helped him to shore.

The spokesman said the windsurfer was tired but uninjured.
