UPDATED TUESDAY 13:38*
POLICE have arrested a woman from the Isle of Wight after officers pursued a stolen car across West Sussex today (Monday).
The car was reported stolen from outside a house in Salisbury, Wiltshire, and was eventually stopped around 70 miles away in Yapton, according to Sussex Police. It was spotted on the A27 at Emsworth at 7.30am.
One officer was injured as he tried to stop the car in a cul de sac in Gaugemaster Way, Ford, shortly after 8am.
A spokesman said the officer grabbed hold of the driver’s door and was dragged for a short distance as the stolen vehicle reversed. He was thrown clear and the vehicle then sped off, ramming into a police car.
The car was stopped again in Yapton and the two occupants — a 39-year old man of no fixed address who was driving and a 36-year-old Isle of Wight woman — were taken into custody for questioning.
The injured officer was taken to St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, and treated for cuts and bruises, before being allowed home. Nobody else was injured in the incident.
Ch Insp Tanya Jones said: "This was good work by several officers who traced and followed the car for several miles on major and minor roads before it was brought to a halt.
"The injured PC was very lucky not to have been more seriously hurt.
"We were also very grateful to local people in Yapton and Ford, who came out and provided valuable assistance, and information about what was happening and the movements of the car."
*A police spokesman said today (Tuesday) that the man was due to appear at Crawley Magistrates' Court today charged with seven offences.
The spokesman said: "Clive Richardson, 39, of no fixed abode, has been charged with burglary dwelling and the theft of a motor vehicle, both in Salisbury, Wiltshire, on October 27 and 28 respectively.
"He was also charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously, using a motor vehicle without third party insurance, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, assault by beating and driving while disqualified, all of the offences alleged to have happened in Gaugemaster Way at Ford, near Arundel, on October 28.
"He was detained to appear before magistrates at Crawley.
"A 36-year-old woman from Sandown, Isle of Wight, arrested on suspicion of burglary dwelling and aggravated vehicle taking, has been bailed to December 17."
