The family of Michael Menson this week met Home Secretary Jack Straw to call for a public inquiry into his mysterious death.

The 30-year-old was found on fire alongside the A406 North Circular Road in Edmonton in January last year.

Mr Menson, a black musician who had hits in the 1980s with rap band Double Trouble later died of his injuries.

A recent inquest ruled he was unlawfully killed and during the hearing police admitted they made mistakes with the investigation.

While in hospital, Mr Menson told family members he had been attacked by four white youths. But officers initially believed the victim, who was a registered schizophrenic, may have set himself alight.

His family have criticised police handling of the investigation which has failed to bring any arrests.

They are now pressing Mr Straw for a public inquiry, similar to the recent one into the death of Stephen Lawrence in south London.

Enfield Race Equality Council and Edmonton MP Andy Love are backing the family's calls.
