A WOULD-BE robber who tried to snatch a woman's handbag is being sought by Isle of Wight police.

The man tried to rob the woman, aged in her 20s, as she walked home from a night out in Sandown.

She resisted and managed to keep hold of her bag.

Nothing was stolen in the attempted robbery, which happened at around 12.30am this morning (Saturday), in Grafton Street, near the junction with Grafton Lane.

The woman was not seriously injured.

Detectives investigating the attempted robbery say the man was described as wearing a black hooded top.

They have appealed for witnesses, or anyone with information about a man acting suspiciously in the area on Friday night, to contact Isle of Wight CID, at Newport Police Station, by calling 101.

Information can also be given anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
