A WOMAN has died after a car went over a cliff along the Military Road last night (Tuesday).

Isle of Wight police were called to the scene, west of Compton Chine Farm, Brook, at about 6.40pm.

The woman, aged in her late 40s and from Dorset died at the scene. She was the only person in the vehicle and no other vehicles are thought to have been involved, police said this morning (Wednesday).

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a call was received at 7.14pm regarding an incident on the Military Road, near Compton Chine and they had assisted police.

Solent Coastguard also confirmed they were called to assist police with the incident.

A police spokesman said today (Wednesday) the woman's body had been recovered and taken to hospital where a post-mortem examination and formal identification were due to take place this week.

Next-of-kin were being informed and HM Coroner had been notified.

"A section of the Military Road was closed as a precaution during the early stages of the investigation. The road was re-opened shortly after 11am.

"Officers called to the scene would like to thank witnesses and members of the public for their co-operation and information with enquiries so far," said the spokesman.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and the weather conditions are not believed to have been a factor, according to police.

*Ray Morey of the Needles Coastguard Rescue team said they were called to the scene after walkers reported seeing a car at the foot of the cliff.

They called for support from Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and the police helicopter helped to light the area.

The car was located and a woman's body was found close to the wreckage.

The Coastguard helicopter was called in to lift the body and the Coastguard team to the top of the cliffs, where police and ambulance were waiting.
