Woman suffers smoke inhalation after fire

A WOMAN collapsed after suffering from smoke inhalation following a fire yesterday evening (Monday).

Fire broke out at the rear of a property in Victoria Road, Newport, at about 8.15pm.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service sent two crews from Newport and one from Ryde to the scene and the blaze was brought under control by 8.50pm.

A nearby house was heavily smoke-logged and a female casualty who had collapsed was taken to St Mary's Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, according to Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

*A St Mary's Hospital spokeswoman said this morning (Tuesday), the elderly woman had been admitted overnight and was in a critical condition.

A witness said they believed the woman had also suffered burns to her leg and arm, however St Mary's Hospital said it would not confirm further details of her injuries.
