A WOMAN was taken to hospital after her car flipped on to its roof on the main Calbourne to Freshwater road this morning (Tuesday).

Police were called to the single vehicle accident, which happened on Middle Road, between Calbourne Mill and the first turning for Chessell Pottery, at 6.38am.

A Renault Clio rolled and blocked the road.

The driver, a 26 year old woman, was taken to St Mary's Hospital, Newport, with minor injuries.

The road was closed by the police for a short time while emergency services dealt with the incident, with traffic diverted, but it has since been reopened.

The Island's roads have been a victim of icy conditions this morning, after temperatures plummeted to below freezing point overnight.

There was also an accident in which another Renault Clio slid off the road and came to rest in a hedge, on Brading Down Road.

The accident was reported to the police at 7.24am this morning.

No injuries were reported.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: "We would urge motorists to take extra care during this period of cold weather as the roads are becoming particularly icy."
