AN ISLE of Wight Young Chamber conference at Cowes Yacht Haven gave more than 200 Island students a chance to get an insight into the world of work.

The No Limits event attracted students from the Island’s five schools and the Isle of Wight College, St Catherine’s, St George’s, Christ the King College, Somerton and Solent middle schools and training provider HTP.

The day began with a quick-fire networking session, giving students the chance to question 40 Island business organisations including Wightlink, Job Centre Plus, UKSA, and members of the Isle of Wight police and fire service about careers.

In the afternoon, students enjoyed a performance from Island band Empress. This was followed by a question-and-answer session and an open-house discussion with the band about their career in music.

BBC World news reporter Nisha Pillai, who lives near Seaview, was also on hand to offer advice.

She emphasised the importance of grabbing every opportunity to progress in work and in life.

Kevin Wilson, from the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry, said: "We have had some great feedback from the business organisations and the students.

"The message is really in the title — there are no limits to what you can achieve.

"It gave them a real insight into life in the working world and guidance about future career paths."

Carisbrooke High student Jessica Kullander said: "It was a fantastic day and we met some great business people.

"I certainly wouldn’t be afraid to contact any businesses about work in future."
