Aldershot Town 0

Enfield 4

(Ryman League premier division)

ENFIELD'S best performance of the year saw them surprise hosts Aldershot Town with a 4-0 win on Saturday.

The Shots, second in the Ryman League premier division, had to win to keep their hopes of promotion alive but they were outplayed by the vibrant E's who rediscovered their early-season form.

Jim Chandler said: 'It was a huge game for us and an unbelievable result. The players were superb, we had a game plan and we stuck to it and we fully deserved to win comfortably.

'We still have three tough games left but those three points could be vital. It looks like Walton & Hersham are down and Boreham Wood and Carshalton are both struggling so a few more points should put us safe.'

Jean-Marie Okita might have given Enfield an early lead but he shot wide when clean through. But his side opened the scoring midway through the first half when John Morgan's shot crept under the body of Andy Pape in the home goal.

Ex-E's stopper Pape had a miserable afternoon, at fault for three of the goals, and the victim of persistent verbal abuse from the visiting fans behind the goal.

Aldershot's task was made harder when they were reduced to ten men as a player was dismissed for two bookable offences. Nevertheless, they came close to equalising with two efforts which hit the post before the break.

James Bunn was recalled to the side at the expense of Richard Dunwell and he had a fine game capped by two excellent goals in the second half, showing his finishing instincts with a brace of clinical strikes.

The goal of the game, however, went to Kevin Rattray as he rounded off a move involving over 20 passes by slotting past Pape.

Glenn Southgate might have made it 5-0 when he broke into the box but Pape partially redeemed himself with a superb save.

Grant Cooper was taken to hospital with concussion after the game and could be out for the season.

The E's visit Purfleet on Friday. Their Easter Monday game against St Albans City at Hendon was postponed because of an unplayable pitch and is now scheduled for May 3. Boreham Wood have agreed to allow Enfield to play home games at their ground for at least the first half of next season.
