Penniwells Riding Centre for the Disabled in Elstree hopes to recruit urgently-needed new volunteers at an open weekend on October 10 and 11.

Group organiser at the Edgwarebury Lane centre Angela Weyman said: "We are so short of volunteers at the moment that some riding lessons have had to be cancelled.

"We have 152 riders booked in weekly and we are open seven days a week. All the riders look forward to and benefit from their visits."

The group is looking for keen volunteers aged over 14 who want to help young people with disabilities realise their dream to learn pony-riding.

At the moment, some riders are losing out on their therapeutic sessions.

"Public response to this open weekend would make such a difference. The riders really do need you and I shall look forward to welcoming prospective volunteers," said Angela.

Those interested can attend one of four sessions over the weekend, at 11am or 2.30pm either day.

"If you have a little spare time each week; if you have considered doing some voluntary work but never quite got around to it; if you would like to help young people and if you are comfortable working around ponies -- you are definitely the person Penniwells is looking for," she added.

Each session will start with coffee and an informative talk, followed by a tour of the facilities. Visitors will also be able to see the riders in action and meet staff, helpers -- and of course, the ponies.
