Young Island stars Shine

By County Press Reporter - Tuesday, June 30, 2009
YOUNG Islanders have helped organise a series of events as part of the annual calendar of events that celebrates what children and young people achieve.
Shine Week is a national festival celebrating all the talents in all young people and is taking place from Monday.
Embracing the energy and enthusiasm of young people, teachers and youth workers, Shine Week is described as an exciting way to celebrate the talent that every young person has.
The first event is being held on the weekend before Shine Week, with a band night taking place in Newport. The event will be held at St George's Park (Newport Football Ground) at 6.30pm on Friday.
During the week a group of young people will meet to begin planning the annual STAR awards, which recognise the achievements of children in care.
On July 10 and 11, young people will undertake an audit of facilities and services for their peers, testing venues and locations and finding out from others what they want to see on offer.
Youth centres across the Island will also open on those evenings to provide taster sessions that range from music making to circus skills.
Isle of Wight Council's Youth Connexions service has helped organise the week. Simon Dear, Isle of Wight Council Commissioner for Positive Activities for Young People, said: "Shine Week is a national initiative we are embracing on the Island. It gives young people the opportunity to celebrate what they achieve
and promote their image in a positive light.
"Already the organisers are getting lots of positive feedback and I am sure
the week will be a great success"
