Youth centre proves it’s great to skate

By Jon Moreno - Monday, December 7, 2009

AT THIS time of year, Ryde Youth Centre is a godsend to the many teenagers wishing to develop their passion for skateboarding and rollerblading.
The centre, in Upper High Street, has hosted the urban sports for about five years and its popularity among the youths who turn up to the SK8 Club every Tuesday night has never wavered, say centre volunteers.
At least 20 youths regularly use it — particularly during the winter months when the weather is inclement, coupled with the long, dark evenings and a lack of outdoor skating facilities.
Those who use the facility, aged between 13 and 19 years and of mixed ability, are supervised by at least two experienced staff.
The portable indoor wooden ramps and modules were recently refurbished and have been dramatically improved by Isle of Wight craftsman Guido Oakley, a supporter of the club.
The facility is also used by micro-scooterists, but BMX cyclists are procluded from joining in because the bike tyres mark and dent the floors.
However, the centre is trying to raise cash to improve the facility to allow BMX cyclist to join in. It will need at least £2,000 to buy special MDF flooring.
"The club has always been popular and is perfect for continuing their pursuits at this time of year," said Ryde Youth Centre leader Stuart Capewell.
"The kids appreciate it and show respect for the equipment. If they didn’t have the facility, they would be skating in the street. This club gives them the opportunity to develop their interests in as safe an environment as we can possibly provide."
Teenagers are charged £1 to use the facility — half of which is going towards the ongoing project to develop Ryde Skate Park.
