Alice Hopkinson, Northwood's "lady with the bicycle", has died, aged 93.

Born in Surrey, Mrs Hopkinson came to the Island in 1955 and loved it from the start.

She and her husband, Alan, a teacher at Cowes High School, moved to Northwood, where she lived until a week before her death at Old Charlton House, Cowes.

Mrs Hopkinson was a wartime civil servant and later ran the house for Alan.

The couple enjoyed picking mushrooms, swimming and exploring the countryside.

After she was widowed, she took up cycling. She continued swimming and riding her bicycle until her late 80s.

Her funeral was followed by tea at her favourite establishment, God’s Providence House.
