A FORMER mayor of South Wight Borough Council, Capt George William Buttle, has died, aged 93.
Born in Stockton, Cleveland, Capt Buttle left school aged 14 to work in a steel mill, before he joined the army.
After completing his initial service, Capt Buttle joined the police force in Richmond, Yorkshire, where he met his late wife, Billie, a children’s nurse, whom he married on Christmas Eve, 1940.
Capt Buttle received a commendation from the chief of police for apprehending a burglar on his first day but with the outbreak of the Second World War, was called to serve with the British Expeditionary Force.
After serving in France, Capt Buttle returned to England to work in a unit guarding HRH Queen Mary and he went on to serve with the Canadian army in the battle of Arnhem.
After the war, Capt Buttle joined the Royal Military Police and served in Gibraltar, Austria and Malaya, before he retired and moved to the Island to run Lake Post Office.
He represented Lake Ratepayers’ Association and Sandown North, before becoming mayor of South Wight Borough Council in 1983.
Capt Buttle was a governor at Lake Middle School and president of Lake Angling Association, while he also helped to raise funds as a churchwarden at St John’s Church, Sandown.
He leaves his sons, Michael and David, daughter, Susan, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be held at St John’s Church, Sandown, on Tuesday, at 10.15am, followed by cremation.
