Dr Ted Mucklow.

THE founder of the special care baby unit at St Mary’s Hospital and a consultant paediatrician on the IW for nearly 30 years, Dr Ted Mucklow, has died, aged 78.

Dr Mucklow, of Castle Lane, Carisbrooke, was born in Cheltenham, on January 24, 1932, the only son of Dr Stuart and Alex Mucklow.

He attended Cheltenham Junior School and Radley College, before reading physiology, at Exeter College, and medicine at University College Hospital, London.

His early career included posts at London teaching hospitals, National Service, with the Royal Army Medical Corps, a spell as ship’s surgeon, off the coast of Brazil, and a lecturer in paediatrics at Oxford University. He met his wife, Dr Lynn Cashel, at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, where they were both specialising in paediatrics.

In 1968, Dr Mucklow became the first consultant paediatrician on the IW and, within four months of arriving, he had established the Island’s first purpose-built special care baby unit.

He was also key in planning the new children’s ward for St Mary’s, which opened in 1992.

He played hockey for the IW and Old Rydeians Hockey Club for 20 years and was founder chairman of Whitecroft Sports Ground Trust.

He was a governor of Sandown High School and Ryde School. He leaves his wife, children, Stuart, Clare, Celia and Gordon, and grandsons, Joshua and Alastair, and sister, Pat.

His funeral service will be held at St Mary’s Church, Carisbrooke, on Thursday at 1pm. Donations to St Mary’s Hospital Juba Link or the Barely Born Appeal, c/o Geoff Leather, 45 Upper St James’s Street, Newport.
