A MUCH-loved Anglican priest who was priest-in-charge of St Alban’s Church, Ventnor, in the 1970s, has died after a long illness in Hastings.
Father Philip Ilott became well known for his highly successful healing services which attracted large congregations.
He appeared regularly on television on the nightly ITV religious programme Com-pany, with author Adrian Plass, who later wrote his biography, A Smile On The Face Of God.
Fr Ilott was born in 1936 and at an early age, joined a cathedral choir with his good singing voice that would later be put to good use in the rituals of sung Mass in the high Anglican church.
As a young man he served in the army and it was in this unlikely setting he decided his vocation would be in the Church.
After leaving the Island, Fr. Ilott became vicar of Mayfield, East Sussex, and later was vicar at St Barnabus Church, Bexhill-on-Sea.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated for him at 3pm’ on Tuesday, April 6, at St Alban’s Church.
His funeral is on April 8, in Hastings.
